How Do I Choose an Inflatable Seal Material
Start by defining the medium, temperature, pressure conditions and installation geometry. A material name alone does not establish whether an inflatable seal will suit an application. Compound formulation and seal construction also matter.
What information should I collect
Prepare an application sheet before comparing materials. Include the following:
- The medium contacting the seal, its concentration, cleaning chemicals and exposure duration
- Minimum, normal and maximum temperatures, including cleaning or shutdown conditions
- Inflation pressure and the pressure difference across the seal, recorded separately
- Groove dimensions, sealing gap, expansion direction and available installation space
- Inflation frequency, required service life and any documented approval requirements
How should I describe pressure
Label the pressure inside the seal separately from the pressure on each side of the sealed opening. Include the units and identify whether values are gauge or absolute. Ask the supplier to confirm the allowable relationship for the proposed profile and installed configuration. Do not treat a material comparison chart as a finished seal pressure rating.
Why does the sealing gap matter
The gap and installation arrangement are part of seal selection. Provide the gap that the seal must close, together with any expected variation. Ask how the proposed profile will be retained and which surface it will contact. The inflatable seal catalogue linked below provides product context for that discussion.

Can a compatibility chart settle the material choice
Use a chart to shortlist candidates and prepare questions. Request confirmation for the specific compound, exposure conditions and finished seal design. Different compounds within one polymer family can have different properties. If a required condition is unknown, record it as unknown rather than substituting an assumed value.
What should be agreed before ordering
Ask for a documented proposed specification, its applicable conditions and any evaluation needed before release. This checklist supports a technical review; it does not establish material approval, a pressure rating or suitability for a particular machine.
