What to Include in a Custom Molded Rubber Drawing and RFQ

A custom molded rubber request for quotation, or RFQ, should explain what the part does and how acceptance will be checked. Supply a controlled drawing with dimensions, units, material requirements and the features that matter to the assembly. Keep unconfirmed requirements visible so they can be resolved before production.

What belongs on the drawing

  • Drawing identifier, revision, date and measurement units
  • Fully defined geometry, reference surfaces and critical mating dimensions
  • Individual tolerances for important features and an agreed general tolerance basis
  • Material or compound requirement, hardness specification and relevant service conditions
  • Areas where flash, parting lines or surface marks could affect function

Explain the function behind a tight dimension. For example, identify which surface locates the part and which feature contacts another component. This gives the supplier a basis for discussing feasibility without assuming every dimension has the same importance.

Use the Molded rubber catalogue to identify the broad part family while preparing the drawing review.

Can I apply one tolerance to the whole part

Ask for a part-specific assessment. Geometry and manufacturing details affect achievable tolerances, and a general reference chart is not a guarantee for every design. Ask the supplier to identify dimensions influenced by mold closure and any features needing a different inspection method.

If a standard is specified, name the applicable document and agreed class rather than writing “standard tolerance.” ISO 3302-1 covers dimensional tolerances for certain solid rubber products, but excludes precision toroidal sealing rings. Do not transfer that scope automatically to precision O-rings.

What commercial and approval information should I add

Separate prototype quantity from expected production volume. State the requested timing without treating it as an agreed lead time. Ask which assumptions, tooling charges and inspection documents are included in the quotation. Define how a sample or first article will be reviewed and who can approve a drawing change.

What should be checked before sending files

Confirm that the drawing revision is current and that you have permission to share it. Remove unrelated confidential details. Keep a record of agreed changes so the purchase specification matches the approved drawing. This checklist does not promise a tolerance, certification, production method or delivery date.
